Haddon Heights, NJ
A strong sense of friendliness fills the 1.5 square mile town of Haddon Heights. Haddon Heights was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature in 1904, from parts of Haddon Township and the defunct Centre Township (which also included the present day Barrington). It was originally settled during the Colonial period and we still have four Pre-Revolutionary War homes that are occupied. Betsy Ross fulled the fabric for the first flag at the Glover Fulling Mill. The town itself was laid out in 1890 as a “new town” planned community along the railroad line to Atlantic City. The White Horse Pike was our “grand avenue” and is now our professional office district. Haddon Heights is the only town in South Jersey with its original passenger and freight station. The borough was selected as a “Classic Towns of Greater Philadelphia" by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission.
The Station Avenue business district has it all: an old fashioned grocery store, John’s Friendly Market, a florist, chocolate shop, photographer, tailor, cleaners, sporting goods, children’s shop, gift shops, banks, hair dressers, interior decorating store, two custom jewelers and a nice array of coffee shops and luncheonettes topped off with our fine dining restaurants. Camden County Park runs through Haddon Heights and provides a playground, bike trails, disc throwing and a dell for entertainment. Annual events include a Fall Harvest Festival, Sunday Farmers Market, Holiday Parade and Christmas House Tour. On the southwestern end of Station Ave is the Haddon Heights War Memorial. Known locally as “The Cannons,” it is popular spot to watch parades, and is where the students of the high school take their pictures for prom, due to its lovely scenery. With various nature walks in the town, combined with the shopping district on Station Ave, it is no wonder why Haddon Heights was named among the best places to live in South Jersey.
Depending on the location of your home, children will attend one of three elementary schools; Atlantic Avenue Elementary School, Glenview Avenue Elementary School, or 7th Avenue Elementary School. All 3 schools teach from grades Pre-K to 6th grade. From 7th to 12th grade, students attend Haddon Heights High School, with other students from the surrounding boroughs of Barrington, Lawnside, and Merchantville..
Offering a unique blend of friendliness, excellent schools, a convenient location and a diverse housing stock, Haddon Heights is a great place to live, to raise children and to do business. Spirited, civic-minded residents initiate and support many community organizations and activities. Customers enjoy the tree-lined streets, the diverse shops, fine restaurants and excellent library, all of which energizes the town’s main street and enhances the home-town feel. Haddon Heights, the friendly community!
